Speaking in the assembly for passing the education budget, Chatterjee said the Centre did not provide Rs 3,470 crore for eight projects for which the state was not able to allocate Rs 818 crore as matching grant.
The education budget for the year has been raised to Rs 3,017 crore and money had been earmarked for various scholarships.
He said a proposal had also been sent to the finance department for raising scholarships amount to engineering, medical and UG students.
Targeting opposition CPI(M), he said the quality of teachers who got appointment in colleges and universities had been compromised during the Left Front rule in the last 34 years.
The Trinamool Congress government would in no way make such compromise and quality of teachers selected would be based solely on merit. This, he said, would help in raising the overall quality of education.
