Kochhar is the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of ICICI Bank, the country's largest private sector lender.
Carleton University has awarded the degree to Kochhar in "recognition of her pioneering work in the financial sector, effective leadership in a time of economic crisis and support for engaged business practices", according to a statement issued by ICICI Bank.

At the ceremony, Kochhar said the honorary degree is a recognition of the growing linkages and vast potential for co-operation between Canada and India.
ICICI Bank's consolidated total assets stood at USD 124.5 billion at the end of June this year.
