Gender neutral parenting and change in mindset is the need of the hour to make workplaces safer and public transport more accessible to women, Justice D Y Chandrachud has said.
He said there must be an attempt to create safe spaces so that women can be equal participants in public life.
"While we have made progress over these few years, it is perhaps time for us to introspect as to why violent crimes against women are not abating," the Supreme court judge said during the 6th annual convocation ceremony of O P Jindal Global University (JGU) here.
"Measures must be undertaken to make workplaces safer and public transport more accessible. To my mind what needs to change is our mind sets. Gender neutral parenting and sensitization is the need of the hour and I hope that your generation can be the required change," he added.
A total of 401 students were awarded degrees for successful completion of graduate and post graduate courses.
Delivering keynote address at the ceremony, Minister of State for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, Rajiv Pratap Rudy said the educational goals of the country need to connect with the contemporary needs of various industries.
"Our educational goals need to connect with the contemporary needs of the various industries in meeting the needs of our diverse economy by equipping the graduates with necessary skills for local and global social responsibility and future employability," he said.
JGU Vice Chancellor Professor C Raj Kumar highlighted the varsity's commitment in promoting the role of women faculty and leadership positions.
"JGU's commitment to promoting the role of women in faculty and leadership positions is reflected in the fact that nearly 45 per cent of full-time faculty members are women, nearly 40 per cent of women faculty members hold leadership positions across our schools, and nearly 42 per cent of students are women," he said.
Axis Bank's managing director and CEO, Shikha Sharma, and JGU Chancellor, Naveen Jindal, and judges of various high courts were also present on the occasion.
