Change of mind set required to check crimes against women

There is a need to change the mind set of the society to check crimes against women apart from intiating awareness programmes and other mechanisms, according to Women and Child Development Minister Maneka Gandhi.
"The incidence of crime against women cannot be controlled unless mindsets of people, in general, are made to change," Gandhi said today in reply to a written query in Parliament.
Safety of women in the country is of utmost priority for the government. The Ministry is endeavouring to put in place effective mechanisms to provide safe environment for women to work and live and fulfill their potential, she said.
According to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), crimes against women like rape, dowry deaths, abduction and molestation increased by 26.7 percent in 2013 compared to the previous year.
Complaint of rapes in the country rose by 35.2 percent to 33,707 in 2013 with Delhi reporting the highest number of cases of 1,441 rapes in 2013.
Mumbai, known for being more women-friendly, recorded 391 rapes last year, while Bangalore registered 80 rapes.
The data says that 309,546 crimes against women were reported to the Indian police last year against 244,270 in 2012, with the highest number recorded in the southern state of Andhra Pradesh.
