In a rare move, Chinese Communist Party's new leaders headed by President Xi Jinping conducted a self criticism session at a high level meeting here to set an example for others in the party's campaign to win back public trust and confidence.
The Politburo of the ruling Communist Party of China (CPC), which is the second highest body, held a special conference from June 22 to 25 presided over by Xi during which self criticisms were carried out, state-run Xinhua news agency reported today.
Xi is also the General Secretary of the CPC.
Politburo members should "implement the dos before asking others to do so, and certainly do not do something themselves if they don't want others to do it," a statement issued after the conference said.
No details about the self criticism carried out by the leaders were provided.
This is a "basic requirement" for the CPC Central Committee Political Bureau to play the leading role, the statement said and called bureau members to take the lead in improving the Party's work styles.
Ever since his election, Xi has been gearing up the party to revitalise itself to halt alienation from people.
Several officials including former Railway Minister Liu Zhijun were being tried for corruption.
The conference was held soon after the CPC launched a year-long "thorough cleanup" of undesirable work styles such as formalism, bureaucracy, hedonism and extravagance.
Party members are required to "look in the mirror, straighten their attire, take a bath and seek remedies," or more straightforward, to reflect on their own practices and correct any misbehaviour, so as to form closer ties with the people, it said.
During the conference, political bureau members discussed measures to enhance efforts to improve work styles, and examined their own conduct to see whether they comply with rules for the fight against bureaucracy and formalism, which were introduced by the new CPC leadership late last year.
