Most places in Punjab and Haryana continued to be in the grip of cold conditions, with Adampur the coldest today in both states.
The minimum temperature at Adampur in Punjab was nine degrees below normal at 4.7 degrees Celsius while Bathinda recorded a low of 5.5 degrees Celsius.
Halwara recorded 6 degrees Celsius and Pathankot 7.8 degrees Celsius. Amritsar recorded 6.9 degrees Celsius, which was also below the normal minimum temperature, a MeT Department official said here.
Cold weather conditions also prevailed in Patiala, where the minimum temperature settled at 7.5 degrees Celsius, six notches below the normal while Ludhiana recorded a low of 8.7 degrees Celsius.
The Union Territory of Chandigarh registered a low of 9.1 degrees Celsius, three notches against the normal temperature.
In Haryana, cold wave swept Karnal making it the coldest place in the state. The minimum temperature recorded was 5 degrees Celsius.
Hisar, too, experienced a cold night at 7.2 degrees Celsius. Temperatures at Karnal and Hisar were eight degrees below normal.
Ambala recorded a low of 9.3 degrees Celsius, down by four degrees against the normal.
At most places in the two states, including Chandigarh, the maximum temperature during the past few days has been settling in the range of 20-22 degrees Celsius, which is 5-8 degrees below normal limits, the official said.
The MeT official attributed the dip in mercury over the past few days in the plains of Punjab and Haryana to fresh spell of snowfall at many places in neighbouring Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir.
"The maximum temperature in Punjab and Haryana including Chandigarh will start rising from Wednesday while there will be a gradual increase in the minimum temperature too later this week," he said.
