College governing body to be disbanded following clash

West Bengal Education Minister Partha Chatterjee on Thursday said the governing body of Behala College, which had witnessed clashes between two groups of Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad members, will be disbanded.

Visiting the college campus, which falls under his assembly constituency, Chatterjee told reporters the recent developments in the college were unfortunate and he would ask all stakeholders, including the college administration, to work for restoration of proper academic atmosphere in the institute.

To a question, he said the governing body of the college will be disbanded and the government will decide the future course of action in the best interest of the college.

Chatterjee said he had discussions with the students and teachers and other officials of the college and was happy to see the academic activity of the college was running smoothly on Thursday.

Being the representative of people of the area, any untoward incident in the college pained him a lot, he said.

A section of students had agitated at Behala College on Saturday, alleging that those having less than 60 per cent marks were asked to pay a large sum of money to some union leaders for allowing them to appear for under-graduate examinations. The union members had denied the charge.

Clashes between two groups of students had also broken out in the college on Tuesday prompting the minister to visit the college.

On November 24 when he was asked to comment on reports of members of TMCP being allegedly involved in extortion activities at Behala College, Chatterjee said, "If we get specific complaint about any such malpractice, we will investigate.
