Though India has progressed in other arenas, medical education has failed to keep pace with global standards as well as advancements in medicine and technology, which has affected Indian medical students when it comes to competing with international medical students, said Pratap A Naidu, executive president of Medical Students Association of India (MSAI).
MSAI is organising the India International Medical Conclave on Dept8-9 which is likely to be also attended by representatives of medical student associations from Nepal, Bangladesh, Malaysia and the US.
According to Dr Narendra Saini, General Secretary, Indian Medical Association (IMA), "Some of the skills that need to be incorporated into medical education include communication skills, clinical skills, and information system and data management.
There is a dire need for medical students to be formally trained into these if the country has to produce better doctors, she said
On the first day of the conclave the renowned lyricist, poet and scriptwriter Javed Akhtar will speak on youth leadership and empowerment while Dr KK Aggarwal, cardiologist, Moolchand Medcity shall emphasise on leadership through spirituality.
The major highlight of the conclave will be the Delhi Declaration, a round-up of the outcomes, which in its more evolved version will be the suggested draft of the new medical education policy.
It will be launched by Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit.
