Cong against executive powers to elected representatives

"The elected representatives after getting executive powers are unable to perform their basic task of enacting good laws for the country," Congress spokesperson Manish Tewari said at an interactive programme organised here by the Constitution Club of India.

Tewari also favoured electoral reforms and said if MPs could confine themselves to law making it would serve Parliamentary system of governance better.

Former Union minister Shashi Tharoor and BJP leaders Chandan Mitra and Rajeev Pratap Rudy also shared their views on the present system of governance at the programme and the ways to improve it.

BJP spokesperson Rajeev Pratap Rudy said, "I am aghast with the way our country is being run. Till now we have introduced 94 amendments in the Constitution which probably was a poorly made law by the British to rule the country."

Former Minister of State for External Affairs, Shashi Tharoor spoke against the British practices which are still followed in Parliament.

"We still use terms like 'Aye' to give our consent to bills and thump the desk during discussion. These are some of the British practices which are still going on in our system," he said.

Dwelling on the issue of Presidential form of governance versus the present system, BJP Rajya Sabha MP Chandan Mitra favoured participation of people, specially youngsters, in political system to improve it.
