Congress demands SIT under IG-level officer to probe Rohtak case

The Congress hit out at the BJP government in Haryana saying that it was 'yet to wake up from its slumber'

The Congress today demanded a special investigation team (SIT) under an IG-level officer to probe the rape-cum-murder case of a mentally-challenged woman from Nepal in Haryana's Rohtak district.

Describing the Rohtak incident as eerily similar to the December 16, 2012 Delhi gang-rape case, Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala hit out at the BJP government in Haryana saying that it was "yet to wake up from its slumber".

"Entire society and nation is deeply shamed by this gruesome rape and murder case. ...Beastly manner in which body parts of the victim were severed. Rods, stones and other foreign objects were found by doctors from private parts, which reflects the extreme perversion reminding us of Nirbhaya case of Delhi," Surjewala said.

He lamented that even five days after the incident, the Haryana police was clueless.

Surjewala alleged that while Haryana BJP government had spent lakhs of rupees on 'Beti Bachao Yojna', Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar and his ministers had not found time to even visit the victim's family so far.

He urged Khattar to take note of the "reprehensible attack on soul of humanity" and provide necessary financial and emotional support to the victim's family.

He demanded the BJP government to immediately form an SIT under the charge of an officer of Inspector General of Police rank or above as also ensure immediate arrest of accused, who are a threat to the society at large.

At present, the SIT investigating the case is headed by a Deputy Superintendent of Police.

The Congress leader said that the government must also ensure speedy trial of the accused through a special court and exemplary punishment to them.

A 28-year-old mentally-challenged woman from Nepal was brutally raped and murdered and her body dumped in a field at a village on the Rohtak-Hisar Highway.
