Cong does not belong to any individual: Selja

The Congress party does not belong to any individual but is like a family that functions on the basis of an ideology, Haryana Congress president Kumari Selja said on Friday.

Her remarks came a day after her predecessor Ashok Tanwar, alleging irregularities in ticket distribution for Haryana Assembly polls, resigned from all election committees of the Congress. He had also alleged that the party had become "Hooda Congress" in Haryana.

"The Congress is Congress and it does not belong to any individual. It is not an individual-based party, it is a party that functions like a family based on its ideology," Selja said at a press conference here.

The Congress functions like a united entity and everyone will together contest the October 21 assembly polls in Haryana to bring it back to power, she said.

Rejecting Tanwar's charges, the Haryana Congress chief said the tickets were distributed according to a set process.

"I don't think these kind of charges have any substance. There is a process adopted for selection of candidates and that has been followed properly," she said.

The Haryana Congress chief urged everyone in the party to come together to win the assembly polls.

"It is our duty to unite and function as a family," she said.

Selja also hit out at the BJP, accusing the party of doing "politics of falsehood" and not fulfilling any of its pre-poll promises.

"Today, people are demanding accountability and a report from this government on what it has achieved so far," she said.

The Congress leader claimed that all sections of society in Haryana, be it employees, farmers, youth, women or Dalits, are upset with the government as it has done nothing for them.

"This government is not coming out with figures because this government has more to hide and less to reveal," Selja said.

She claimed that the BJP has also shut down the works initiated by the erstwhile Congress government.

She alleged that the drug mafia is ruling the roost in Haryana and the youth are being engulfed by drugs in the absence of any job opportunities for them.

Selja said among its 90 candidates for the Haryana Assembly polls, 10 are women and the average age of candidates is 55 years.

Of the total candidates, 54 are from the general category, 17 are Scheduled Castes and 19 are from the Other Backward Classes, she said.
