Congress today warned the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre and the SAD-BJP government in the state against "robbing Punjab of its waters".
"Please don't open this pandora's box as it has the potential of turning Punjab into a tinderbox," Congress leaders warned the Central and state governments.
Congress Deputy Leader in Lok Sabha Amarinder Singh and Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly Sunil Jakhar besides other senior leaders and legislators, said the Akalis were "badly cornered on the drug scandal and other issues".
"Now, in order to save their skin they were ready to reach a compromise and accept the terms and conditions about the Sutlej-Yamuna Link (SYL) which are grossly against Punjab," Amarinder said.
Both Amarinder and Jakhar said they will not be surprised if Badal agreed to the terms and conditions of the SYL canal "as he has already shown his weakness by going with BJP in supporting the anti-farmer amendments in the Land Acquisition Bill in Parliament. Although, the Chief Minister has adopted a contrary posture."
Badal failed to get any compensation for farmers, who committed suicide and suffered damage due to unseasonal rains, Amarinder alleged.
"We warn Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and Union Water Resources Minister Uma Bharti not to fiddle with fire lest. It would spiral out of everybody's control," the Congress leader said.
Notably, Bharti had yesterday assured Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar that the Centre will prepare a roadmap within 45 days for finding a solution to the SYL canal and other issues with Punjab.
