Senior police inspector K S Hegaje of the Manikpur police station told reporters that it was on May 25, after the family members of one Badresh N Mehta went to the Mahalakshmi temple at Dahanu, that cash worth Rs 17.91 lakh were stolen.
The Manikpur police registered offences under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and began probing the crime.
Later, the police learnt that the one who found the key came with one of his friends and stole the cash, which was given to one Gora Bopal Chavan (28).
The police raided Chavan's shop in Vasai and seized the cash, the police said.
The two teenagers were taken into custody, while Chavan was arrested, the police said.
