Expressing concern over controversial remarks made in connection with the chanting of 'Bharat Mata ki Jai', CPI today demanded "severe" action against those making such "irresponsible statements".
The Left party said the statements were a "purposeful" tactic to divert public attention from the "miserable failure" of BJP in different fields.
CPI general secretary S Sudhakar Reddy said the remarks by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and yoga guru Ramdev favouring the chanting and Islamic seminary Deoband opposing it, was "match fixing" between two fundamentalist groups to divide people along religious lines to consolidate their "shaky bases".
"It looks (like) this is a purposeful tactic to divert attention from the miserable failure of BJP in different fields which resulted in disillusionment of people.
"This is a match fixing between two fundamentalist groups to divide the people on religious grounds to consolidate their shaky bases. Union government should show courage to take severe action against such irresponsible statements," Reddy said in a statement.
He said no one can be "forced by threats" to chant the slogan and stressed the same should be voluntary.
The former Parliamentarian termed Ramdev's remark as "not only irresponsible but an open incitement" for communal clashes in the country.
Amid a raging debate over nationalism, Fadnavis had on Saturday said that those unwilling to say 'Bharat Mata Ki Jai' have no right to stay in the country.
Ramdev also triggered a controversy, saying but for the rule of law and Constitution, he would have "beheaded" lakhs of people for refusing to chant 'Bharat Mata ki jai'.
Earlier this month, prominent Islamic seminary Darul Uloom Deoband issued an edict asking Muslims to refrain from raising the slogan as it is "akin to idol-worship" which is against the tenets of Islam.
