About 150 CPI(M) actitivists, led by mayoral candidate C Padmanabhan today laid near siege of the camp office of the District Collector alleging that the ruling AIADMK workers were indulged in distribution of money to the voters in several areas.
The workers, including former MP, P R Natarajan, raised slogans against the act of AIADMK workers, who they alleged were going door to door and distributing money and the administration failed to check it.
The siege of the office on Race Course Road created some anxious moments in the area, even as DRO, Christudas and Deputy Commissioner of Police Parves Kumar rushed to the spot, as the Collector Archana Patnaik was not in station, police said.
The officials received a memorandum on behalf of the collector, after which they dispersed.
Earlier in the day, some BJP workers had picked up quarrel with a few AIADMK workers, over the alleged distribution of money in Goundanpalayam in the city.
However, after some argument, the ruling party workers left the scene and Union minister, Pon Radhakrishnan displayed the currency notes, which were given to a BJP worker, at a press meet.
Meanwhile, residents in Podanur prevented a few ruling party workers entering the area, in protest against the non-implementation of election promises, including providing basic amenities in the area, police said.
