Curfew was today clamped in parts of Bandipora district following death of a youth in alleged police firing during a violent protest yesterday.
"Curfew has been imposed in some parts of Bandipora to maintain law and order," a police spokesman said.
He said restrictions on the movement of people have been imposed in areas falling under the jurisdiction of police stations Safakadal, Khanyar, Nowhatta, M R Gunj and Rainawari.
After Friday prayers, protesters, who were demanding restoration of power and water supply, started pelting stones on a police camp and also tried to set ablaze a police vehicle, prompting police to open fire which allegedly led to the death of 18-year-old Farhat Ahmad Dar at Sumbal in Bandipora, 53 kms from here.
Police has registered an open FIR under section 302 RPC (murder) and started investigations.
Deputy Commissioner Bandipora has ordered a magisterial probe into the incident.
Meanwhile, normal life elsewhere in the Valley came to a standstill as markets remained closed in protest against the killing. However, skeletal transport services were plying some routes in the Valley.
Kashmir University has postponed all exams scheduled for today in view of the law and order situation.
"All Kashmir University exams scheduled to be held on Saturday have been postponed. Fresh dates for the postponed papers shall be notified separately," a spokesman of the university said.
