At a function organised today at the KNP, Assam Principal Chief Conservator of Forest and Chief Wildlife Warden Suresh Chand congratulated the CWRC, the first of its kind rescue and rehabilitation centre set up in the country.
CWRC has established a relief protocol and proven to the world that "individual animal welfare is critical for conservation of key species," he said.
Commenting on the recent loss of animal life in the KNP due to floods, Chand said, "Security has been tightened and at present 235 platoons of Assam Forest Force, 170 armed home guards, 120 local armed youths, besides 400 regular forest staff are engaged in anti-poaching work."
Established in 2002, the CWRC has become an example for the world in the field of wildlife conservation, he said.
Chand said the CWRC has been functioning in a dedicated manner. No visitors are allowed in the centre's rehabilitation centre which is located inside the Kohora range in KNP.
Speaking on the occasion, Executive Director and CEO of Wildlife Trust of India Vivek Menon said earlier, animals suffered a lot during natural calamities like floods.
"It was then that the idea of setting up an effective rehabilitation centre was mooted," Menon said. (MORE)
