Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) will organise a day-long conference on 'Solar rooftop: Replacement for diesel generators in residential societies' next week.
The green body said that most of the residential societies in India are equipped with diesel generator (DG) sets to supply electricity during power outages.
"However, use of diesel based power generation is costly and causes damage to environment and health," CSE said.
Representatives from the urban development authorities, resident welfare authorities, think-tanks, solar rooftop developers and distribution companies are expected to attend the conference.
Not only this, solar rooftop can trim down the monthly power bills of the residents, as excess power generated through solar rooftops can be consumed by residents even when there are not any outages, it said.
"Apart from releasing the study, the conference seeks to reflect on the issues and challenges in the deployment of solar rooftop in residential societies while exploring ways to scale up the technology in order to replace DG sets," it said.
The calculator is spreadsheet that evaluates the viability of solar power as an option for an individual's electricity demand.
"The calculator is designed for domestic consumers for all states of the country and will help in assessing the power demand in any home and provide information on the system that could cater to this demand along with information on reduction in electricity bills and the time it will take to recover the money invested," the green body added.
