The Delhi Commission for Women has issued notice to the Delhi Police over illegal sale of liquor in houses in Holambi Kalan and Jahangirpuri area.
Swati Maliwal, the commission's chairperson, during recent late night inspections in Holambi Kalan and Jahangirpuri found rampant illegal sale of liquor in houses which made it extremely difficult for women and girls to come go out of their houses after dark.
"Since it is unfathomable that such large scale and sustained illegal activities can be carried out without the protection of police, notice has been issued to the Deputy Commissioner of Police Vigilance.
"The DCW has also issued notice to the DCP Outer District on sale of illegal liquor in Holambi Kalan," a statement issued by the women's panel said.
The commission was conducting late night surprise inspections to various areas of Delhi for the last 11 days.
Maliwal and her team visited Jahangirpuri and Holambikalan colonies and it was learnt that the women and girls were facing severe problems due to criminal and illegal activities in the area including sale of liquor in houses.
The police has confiscated several stacks of liquor from these houses in the presence of the DCW.
One of the occupants blatantly dared the commission to stop them from selling liquor in their homes stating that they paid monthly commissions to the local police. The same has been recorded on a video, the statement said.
"Prima facie, it appears that the illegal activity of selling liquor in homes is occurring with active connivance and protection of the police. This is endangering the dignity and safety of thousands of women and girls in Delhi. Therefore, urgent steps should be taken to immediately put an end to these activities," Maliwal said.
