Delhi government today constituted a three-member committee to suggest fire safety norms for planning and designing of Metro stations and tunnels in the national capital.
"The committee, comprising chief fire officer Dr G C Misra, DMRC executive director (electrical) A K Singh and DMRC chief architect Papiya Sarkar, will suggest fire safety norms for planning and designing of Metro station and tunnels," said a senior official of transport department.
The official also said that committee will submit its report in three months.
"At present, no fire safety norms for metro station and tunnels exist in the country. DMRC, therefore, adopted National Fire Protection Association (NFPA 130) guidelines for planning and designing of metro station and tunnels.
"These norms were developed in the United States. Most of the countries that have developed Metro Systems have evolved their own norms and standards to suit the specific condition and requirement of the country," he added.
According to the department, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has now gained enough experience and reached in a position to develop fire safety norms.
"New fire safety norms will be more suitable to our conditions and can act as guidlines or other Metros coming up in the country," the official added.
