The deceased has been identified as constable Karamveer (32), who hailed from Jhunjhunu district of Rajasthan. He was posted at Alipur Police Station in outer Delhi.
The incident took place around 12:40 AM last night when Karamveer and a home guard were manning a check post near Jhangola village and had received a tip off about movement of suspected liquor mafia on a bike in the area.
"The duo saw two bike-borne youth carrying a carton of liquor. When they were signalled to stop, they tried to flee. As Karamveer and the home guard gave them a chase, the pillion rider pulled out a pistol and shot the constable in his chest," said a senior police official.
When a police team went to Jhangola village in search of the assailants, they were attacked by the villagers who pelted stones on them. A head constable, identified as Joginder Singh, suffered head injury after a stone hit him. He had to be rushed to hospital.
A case of murder and under other various other sections of IPC have been registered and raids are being conducted to nab the assailants.
