Delhi witnesses rise in dengue, fall in malaria cases

Delhi witnessed a sharp increase in Dengue cases between January and August as against the same duration last year, while malaria count has declined over the same period, according to municipal corporations.
The cases for dengue registered in 2012 for the period January 1-August 10 was 10 while the figure for the same period in 2013 stands at 41, a report released today by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi said.
The report also said 122 cases of malaria were reported between January and August in 2012, while the figure was 53 so far this year.
"Cases of dengue depend on the rain pattern. If there are intermittent rains, and temperature falls, the cases will increase," North Delhi and East Delhi corporations Public Relation Officer Yogendra Singh Mann told PTI.

August so far has registered the highest 21 cases of dengue, while March and May posted none.
For Delhi region, for the period till August, the total Dengue cases reported stands at 35, while six infections were reported from UP, Haryana and other states, the report said.

Figures for various corporations are - North (23), South (7) and East (2). Three additional cases came up from regions in Delhi outside the jurisdiction of MCD.
Meanwhile, Malaria cases reported from Delhi region between January and August stands at 105, while 55 additional infections were reported from UP, Haryana and other states, the report said.

July registered the highest with 18 cases, while January and March posted none.
On the measures taken to combat the situation, Mann said, "We organise regular sensitisation campaign where we ask all 12 zones from the three corporations to appoint a nodal officer to monitor the progress of measures taken."
The number of legal notices issued for mosquitogenic conditions stood at 65,709 as compared to 30,061 last year over the same period, the report said.
