Passengers should also stop their co-passengers from carrying inflammable objects like crackers, gas cylinder, acid, petrol, kerosene, dry grass/leaves, sigri and stove among others, it said in a statement.

"Carrying such inflammable objects on the trains is a punishable offence under section 164 of the Railway Act where the offender may get an imprisonment upto three years, or a fine of Rs 1,000 or both," it said.

The Railways gave out security helpline numbers 011-23303982, 011-23303983, 011-23303748 for the benefit of passengers.

The appeal comes a day after the train fire incident in Gulbarga in Karnataka which claimed two lives. An inquiry into the incident has already been launched to ascertain the cause of the fire. Sources said the probe would investigate if passengers were carrying inflammatory material.

Two passengers were charred to death and about nine suffered severe burns when a stationary general coach of Solapur-bound Falaknuma passenger train from Hyderabad caught fire during its halt at Gulbarga station.
