Environment Minister Anil Madhav Dave in a written reply said that more than 6,000 sites have been identified in five states for raising the plantations.
"The Forest Research Institute in Dehradun has prepared a DPR for undertaking plantation and associated activities along the river Ganga and its major tributaries.
"The DPR envisages plantations on sites located within five km on both sides of river Ganga and two km on both sides of its major tributaries," Dave said.
The state-wise break-up of these sites include 3,378 for Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh - 2,251, Bihar - 375, Jharkhand - 36, West Bengal - 157.
Dave said the DPR provides for carrying out plantations to the extent of 1,33,751 hectares in the five states over a period of five years including the current year.
