The driver was hit by bullets fired by illegal hunters and no insurgents were involved in the firing as alleged by locals, said Additional Superintendent of Police (Headquarters) Prateek V Kumar Thube.
According to the survey team of Advent Oil Company, they were returning after work in a hired vehicle when at 11.30 pm last night they found trees lying on the road blocking it at Doldoli, about 10 km away from district headquarters Diphu.
The injured driver identified as Kayum somehow managed to drive the team to Diphu where he was admitted to Diphu Civil Hospital. The driver was declared out of danger by the hospital authorities, they said.
Locals suspected splinter groups of surrendered militant outfits could be involved in the firing.
