Processions for immersion of Durga idols in the city partially disrupted traffic movement today along several roads leading to the Yamuna ghats, inconveniencing commuters.
Traffic jams were caused on various routes as hundreds of trucks and other vehicles bearing the idols headed to the river for the immersion following the conclusion of the Durga Puja festival. Vehicular movement remained heavy on almost all roads leading to the various Yamuna ghats.
"Traffic congestion was also seen in and around Red Fort ground, Ramlila Maidan, Parade ground, Kalindi Kunj, Dangal Maidan, ITO Bridge, Old Delhi railway station, both sides of Wazirabad Sur Ghat, Chhat Pooja Ghat, IP Estate, eastern side of the Yamuna pushtas and thokars. Traffic diversions were put in place for some routes," said a senior traffic police official.
He, however, added that although the traffic remained heavy in the areas where immersions took place, there were no big traffic jams in the rest of the city.
Meanwhile, idol immersion remained peaceful and no untoward incident was reported.
"About 11,000 devotees thronged both the ghats of the Yamuna and performed religious rituals which concluded with the immersion of about 230 idols amidst elaborate arrangements made by the district administration in co-ordination with Flood Control Department, Delhi Police, Delhi Jal Board, Delhi Fire Service, EDMC etc," said Deputy Commissioner (Revenue), Kunal.
Immediately upon immersion, the idols and puja material was removed from the river and kept aside for disposal by EDMC to ensure minimum pollution of the Yamuna, he added.
