To check discharge of industrial waste into the rivers, 328 large scale industries of Punjab have installed Effluent Treatment Plant systems.
Stating this here today, Ravinder Singh, Chairman Punjab Pollution Control Board said in addition 3,621 water polluting small scale and 170 medium scale industries have installed the ETP or re-circulation treatment systems.
"Thus, all the large, medium scale units and 99.75 per cent of small scale unit have installed effluent treatment plant," he said.
Singh said that about 1,000 industrial unit have joined various Common Effluent Treatment Plants (CETP) provided in different cities.
Electroplating industry of three cities -- Ludhiana, Jalandhar and Mohali, which were the main cause of worry for river pollution, have now joined CETP, Ludhiana based on zero liquid discharge technology.
Ravinder Singh said that 909 small scale units have become members of the CETP, resulting in the stoppage of about 66 lakh litres/ month of toxic effluents earlier being discharged into rivers directly or indirectly through sewers.
All the eight large and medium scale electroplating industries of Ludhiana have adopted Zero Liquid Discharge technology, he informed in a release.
For the waste water of leather units at Jalandhar being discharged into Kala Singha Drain leading to river Sutlej, a module of CETP has been commissioned. "With this the pollution potential in Kala Singha drain has reduced significantly," he said.
