In the wake of Muzaffarnagar communal violence, around 50,000 people had left their homes and were living in 58 relief camps, Secretary (Home) Kamal Saxena told reporters.
He said 26,000 lived in camps in Muzaffarnagar and 15,000 in Shamli.
Saxena said that to motivate people to return to their homes, Saharanpur Commissioner has been nominated as the nodal officer. He has been entrusted with the task of their rehabilitation.
He said assistance of prominent persons was also being taken and meetings of peace committees were being held to instill confidence among the people.
