More than 30,000 devotees offered afternoon prayers at the Hazratbal Shrine as part of the celebration of the Eid Milad-un-Nabi, officials said.
They said the holy relic of Prophet Muhammad was displayed by its custodian after the prayers.
The officials said many devotees from far-flung areas of the Valley had arrived at the Shrine last night in order to offer the morning prayers at Hazratbal.
The Muslim Auqaf Trust, which manages the affairs of the shrine, had made arrangements for these devotees.
Milad processions were taken out in the city and other places of the Valley.
Hazratbal Shrine and many other mosques were decorated and illuminated with florescent lights while special religious flags were hoisted atop some buildings and vehicles to mark the occasion.
