The foundation stone of the unit (mtpa), which will have a capacity of 2 million tonnes per annum, was laid by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today in Panagarh.
"The 2 mtpa capacity unit is to be located at WBIDC Panagarh Industrial Park in Burdwan district of West Bengal at an investment of Rs 500 crore," a statement by Emami Cement said.
"The project will be developed over a area of around 65 acres which has been allotted to Emami Cement by WBIDC. The plant is expected to be commissioned by end of the 2016," it added.
According to company officials, the project is expected to become operational soon.
Raw material for the Bengal unit plant will be sourced from the company's captive limestone mines in Chhattisgarh, it said.
Emami is also looking to set up cement plants in Rajasthan and Andhra Pradesh.
