Ex-KSU leader surrenders

A former leader of the Khasi Students Union (KSU), who had escaped to Bangladesh to join the proscribed Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council, surrendered before the police today, officials said.
Fredrick Kharmawphlang, who served as a self styled organizing and political secretary of the outfit since his joining the outfit surrendered today afternoon at the police headquarter, Inspector General of Police (Operations) G H P Raju told PTI.
He said the young man crossed over the International border yesterday evening before he made up his mind to surrender.
Kharmawphlang appeared very weak and will be lodged as a surrenderee at the Mawiong camp of the state police for completion of all formal procedures, the officer said.

Kharmawphlang was a former Vice-president of the KSU when he deserted the students' body and escaped to Bangladesh in February last year when the Inner Line Permit movement was at its peak in the state.
Raju said the former KSU leader stayed in Putisara, a Khasi-inhabited village in Bangladesh, bordering India.
He was accompanied by his parents and few leaders of the KSU during surrender.
