Sovana Sarkar had died last week and the state government's health department committee gave the nod yesterday to allow extraction of corneas, kidneys and liver to give a new lease of life to at least four other patients.
"Just like Goddess Durga returns every next year, my mother will also return in a new form. I knew that my mother will not remain with me but I am happy that while going away she gave life to someone else," her son Prasenjit said.
Bureaucratic hurdles made the task tough for them but after the intervention of the state Health Minister Sashi Panja, the government committee approved the case.
"The family suffered from a lot of mental agony after seeing her in that condition for so many days. But they decided to fight it out so that her last wish was granted. We must ensure that from now on people like them do not suffer to donate organs," said Dr Indranil Khan of Cacutta Medical College who helped the family in getting the permission.
"The extraction and transplantation was done simultaneously last night. One kidney went to a patient admitted in our hospital, while the other one was rushed to another patient in SSKM (government-run) hospital," Belle Vue CEO P Tondon said.
Prosenjit said his father was in a state of trauma after seeing his wife's sufferings but he also wanted to see her last wish fulfilled.
Her two corneas were donated to the eye bank at Disha Eye Hospitals, while her liver could not be transplanted for want of a recipient in such a short time.
