Farmer killed by cousin over land dispute

A 60-year-old farmer was shot dead and his three family members injured in an alleged attack by armed assailants including his NRI cousin over a land-related dispute near Salarpur village, police said here today.
The victim Shingara Chand was shot dead last night while his son Jiwan and brothers Harbilas and Laxman got injured when his cousin Resham Chand along with Kulbir Singh Barapind, a former Khalistan Commando Force (KCF) terrorist and now an SGPC member, along with six others attacked them on Phagwara-Jandiala road, they said.
Kulbir allegedly had fired at Shingara while others had attacked the family members with sharp-edged weapons, they said.
Shingara had taken 19 acres of land on rent from Gujja Ram, his uncle and Resham's father, several decades ago, they said, adding that now Resham, a UK-based NRI, wanted it vacated over which the dispute started, police said.
Resham, his two brothers Pal Ram and Mohinderpal, Thakur Das and Hari Ram alias Bishan Das have been arrested while Barapind, Balbir Chand and Manoj Chand, are absconding, they said.
Two cars, used by the accused, have been recovered, police said, adding but no weapon used in the crime has been recovered yet.
The assailants were allegedly wielding firearms and sharp-edged weapons, they said.
A case has been registered against the assailants under relevant sections of the IPC including 302 (murder) and 307 (attempt to murder)and the Arms Act, they said.
SHO Sadar Police station Inspector Lakhwinder Singh said that raids were being conducted to nab the absconding assailants, including Barapind.
