The new crop insurance scheme being formed by the Centre should give priority to farmers' interest, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said here today.
The new scheme should be able to provide minimum guarantee to the farmers for loss of their crops due to natural calamity, he said.
Chouhan was speaking during a meeting called by Prime Minister Narendra Modi here to discuss formulation of new crop insurance scheme.
Chouhan said that the crop insurance scheme of the erstwhile UPA government kept the interest of the insurance company foremost in the policy.
He said that BJP in their election manifesto has promised to keep the interest of the farmers as the sole agenda.
The meeting lasted for about an hour and was attended by Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh, Union Agriculture Minister Radha Mohan Singh, and senior officials of the Agriculture Ministry and the Prime Minister's Office.
