The next line of action will be decided in a meeting on November 18 which will be attended by eight farmers unions and four Khet Mazdoor unions, General Secretary of BKU Ekta Ugrahan Sukhdev Singh Kokri said here.
Kokri condemned the move of the Bathinda police for using force against farmers who were peacefully holding agitation at Khokhar village in Bathinda district yesterday.
At least a dozen persons sustained injuries yesterday after a clash broke out between farmers, demanding "adequate" compensation for cotton crop loss and policemen, forcing Punjab Minister Janmeja Singh Sekhon to cancel his visit to the area for laying foundation stone of a road.
The protest was part of the farmers' agitation, announced last month, whereby they would gherao Akali ministers, MLAs and show black flags to them for "failing" to meet their demands.
Kokari said farmers were agitating in view of the alleged indifferent attitude of the state government towards their demands.
"If Bathinda police fails to withdraw cases registered against farmers then in meeting on November 18, we will take a call on intensifying agitation," he said.
Kokri alleged that a DSP rank officer used indecent language while asking protesters to vacate the place in Bathinda and farmers strongly took exception to it.
They were demanding Rs 40,000 per acre compensation for farmers whose crop got damaged by white fly attack, Rs 20,000 per family compensation for farm labourers, Rs 4,500 per quintal rate for Basmati PUSA 1509 variety, Rs 5,000 per quintal for Basmati PUSA 1121.
Later, they had announced to gherao Akali ministers, MLAs and other party leaders whenever they visit villages.
