Rich tributes were paid to the veteran journalist and the chairman of the Kashmir Times group, Ved Bhasin who passed away in Jammu on November 5.
The function to pay tributes to the Bhasin was organized by Press Club Jammu in which a large number of national and local journalists, academicians, members of various civil societies, and other prominent personalities from Jammu and Kashmir participated.
The 86-year-old journalist, who was suffering from degenerative brain disease, had breathed his last at his residence in Gandhi Nagar belt of Jammu city on November 5.
Popularly known as the 'Grand Old Man' of English journalism in the state of Jammu and Kashmir, Bhasin had written for a range of newspapers and journals on local, national and international affairs.
Several prominent journalists threw light on the life of Bhasin, terming him as one of the "torch bearer" of the freedom of speech in the country, who throughout his life worked hard to highlight the plight of downtrodden and marginalized communities.
Bhasin had started his journalism career with Naya Samaj, an Urdu weekly from 1952-54. Later, he founded the Daily Kashmir Times in 1955. He had also worked with news gathering agency UNI as its J&K bureau chief from 1963-1969
Bhasin was President of J&K Association of Journalists, Jammu Editors Conference, and Press Club of Jammu twice and served on various Press bodies including Press Advisory Committees (as Convener) for a number of years.
Family members of Bhasin including his two daughters, Anuradha Bhasin and Anju Bhasin also attended the function. Anuradha is also working as a journalist.
