Spike Jonze defeated veterans like Woody Allen and David O Russell to win his first Oscar in original screenplay category for his futuristic romance "Her" while the best adapted screenplay honour went to John Ridley for "12 Years A Slave".
Jonze was a favourite to take home the Oscar for "Her", which is about a love affair between a man played by Joaquin Phoenix and his operating system Samantha, voiced by Scarlett Johansson.
The screenplay of "Her" also scored a Golden Globe award in January.
Jonze has received four Academy Award nomination in his career with his first for 2000s "Being John Malkovich". "Her" earned him the remaining three.
The sci-fi film's soothing ballad "The Moon Song", which Karen O, the lead singer of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs penned with Jonze was also vying for the best original song but lost out to "Let It Go" from "Frozen".
Ridley creatively crafted the real life story of Solomon Northup into a dramatic movie about the slavery in "12 Years A Slave".
Ridley won the Oscar against the other accomplished contenders John Pope and Steven Coogan for 'Philomena', Richard Linklater, Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy for 'Before Midnight', Billy Ray for 'Captain Phillips' and Terence Winter for 'The Wolf of Wall Street'.
The award-winning screenwriter has also penned seven novels.
His most notable work includes Oliver Stone's "U-Turn", David O Russell's "Three Kings" and the George Lucas-produced "Red Tails".
