Four ultras surrender in Chhattisgarh during 'foundation week'

Four naxals, including a woman, surrendered in Chhattisgarh's insurgency-hit Kondagaon district on the sidelines of the 'foundation week' being observed by outlawed CPI (Maoist) to mark ten years of its inception.
The cadres were allegedly involved in various crimes, including destroying school buildings and looting property, launching attacks on security forces and also looting an Electronic Voting Machines (EVM) in 2009 general elections among others, a senior police officer said.
"The cadres, associated with the movement since past seven years, turned themselves in before police this afternoon," Kondagaon Additional Superintendent of Police Surjit Atri told PTI.
They are identified as Dhansingh Nag (25), Ramu Gond (53), Budhram (40) and the woman Juggi Salam (25), Atri said.

While Ramu was active as member of Kiskoda local operation squad (LOS), three others of Barda LOS, he said.
Security in the naxal-affected region of Chhattisgarh has been stepped up as CPI (Maoist) is observing 'foundation week' from September 21 to 27 to mark the decade of merger between Maoist Communist Centre (MCC) and People's War Group (PWG) to form CPI (Maoist) on September 21, 2004.

Meanwhile, according to intelligence department inputs, Maoists had planned to hold several programmes in their strongholds across some states to commemorate the 'foundation week'.
The ultras wanted to demonstrate their influence even after facing critical situation in several regions, they said, adding the rebels were asked to conduct a recruitment drive to boost their strength during this period.

A senior police officer said that around 225 cadres have surrendered this year in the state so far.
