Vouching for the safety of its nuclear technology which would be used for the Jaitapur Nuclear Power Project in Maharashtra by French firm Areva, Ambassador of France to India, Francois Richier today said "the reactors would be very safe and Fukushima-resistant."
"We have tested the reactors in France and they are very safe. Without being convinced about its safety, we won't give it to India.. It is safe and Fukushima resistant. We have not a single nuclear accident in France," he told reporters.
Noting that China has already purchased two of these reactors, he said, "Those reactors would go for production before India does, so you can see the performance of these reactors."
Commenting on the status of the project with the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited in Jaitapur, he said, "talks are going on. There are several issues like the price of the equipment, financial issues, etc."
Areva would construct six 1,650 MW EPR reactors at Jaitapur in Maharashtra.
Richier is slated to meet Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa tomorrow.
He said more French companies are interested in setting up shops in Tamil Nadu, as Planning Commission Vice Chairman has appreciated the growth story of the state.
He said France has a total investment worth USD 18 billion in India of which one quarter is in Tamil Nadu.
