Maharashtra Minister of State for Tribal Development Rajendra Gavit has called for putting an end to atrocities against women and making them self-reliant.
"Women should have massive participation in cooperative movement. They should be given importance in various sectors, including employment, business opportunities, trading, etc," Gavit said during a function organised by Mahila Dakshata Committee (vigilance committee of Thane police) and Manor police to redress the grievances of women at Manor town in Palghar yesterday.
He also said that he has faith in women voters, who would judiciously exercise their right to franchise.
Thane district (rural) superintendent of police Anil Kumbhare said women were coming forward and lodging complaints of atrocities on them. As a result, a total of 254 cases could be resolved last year, he said.
He said police would also take prompt action on complaints of illegal liquor shops in the villages.
Kumbhare suggested that 30 per cent of the total 37 police stations in the district rural areas should be headed by women police officers.
