The Goa police will train Home Guard personnel and Civil Defence volunteers in tackling modern day challenges and disasters, state Director General of Police (DGP) Muktesh Chandar said on Thursday.

He was speaking at an event organised to mark the Home Guard and Civil Defence Services Day at the Police Headquarters here.

The DGP lauded the Home Guard personnel in Goa saying they were discharging their duties more seriously than their counterparts in some other states.

"The Home Guard and Civil Defence have been active, but they also need to be trained to tackle modern day challenges. Goa has around 1,500 Home Guard personnel, who are usually deployed for regulation of traffic in various cities.

"We have been imparting training to the Home Guard and Civil Defence volunteers from time to time, but modern day challenges are increasing. Goa police will train them in tackling modern day challenges and disasters," he said.

"We have seen Mumbai type of (terror) attacks. We have also seen disasters of various types and there is a need that even our Home Guard and Civil Defence volunteers must receive adequate training to deal with different types of disasters, which may occur," the DGP said.
