Odisha Governor Satya Pal Malik today approved the premature release of 24 life convicts lodged in different jails across the state.

The governor gave his nod based on the recommendation of the State Sentence Review Board and the state government, a Raj Bhavan official said.

Malik gave this approval in exercise of the powers conferred on him under Article 161 of the Constitution of India, he added.

Malik interacted with vice-chancellors and heads of different voluntary organizations in the state. The vice-chancellors apprised him about the functioning of their respective universities, he said.

He also met state functionaries of different voluntary organizations under his control. The state branch of Indian Red Cross Society, Bharat Scouts and Guides and St John Ambulance presented brief accounts of their activities and programmes, the official added.

Malik took over as the governor of Odisha last month after S C Jamir completed his tenure.
