The Kerala government has decided to sanction Rs 3 lakh as compensation to the two sisters, who were seriously injured in a road mishap here in February last year, and one of them is still undergoing treatment at a private hospital here.
The decision was taken at a cabinet meeting yesterday, Kerala Women's commission said in a press release today.
Sree Vidya (32) and Sreedevi (29) had lost their mother and younger sister in the mishap. Their father had died 7 years ago.
The family, hailing from Ottapalam in Palakkad were on the way to railway station after visiting a temple here, when they were hit by a speeding car. Sree Vidya and Sreedevi were admitted to a hospital here and had regained consciousness after two days.
Even after they were discharged, medical problems continued to haunt them. Sree vidya had to be hospitalised recently as she had to undergo another surgery.
Following a media report about the sad plight of the two sisters, Women's Commission member Dr Lissy Jose had visited them at the hospital last week and promised all help.
She submitted a report to the Women's Commission Chairperson K C Rosakutty and forwarded it to Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, recommending immediate intervention and support.
'This was seriously considered by the Cabinet and an assistance was announced', the release said.
