Punjab Government has agreed to sanction land for cremation and building a memorial of 282 Indian soldiers whose mortal remains have been retrieved from 'Shaheedan da Khu' in Ajnala, Deputy Commissioner of Amritsar Ravi Bhagat said here today.
Bhagat, who paid a visit to the site, said Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal had called up Local Gurdwara Management Committee head Amarjit Singh Sarkaria and promised to sanction land for cremation of the martyrs and building a memorial for them.
The Deputy Commissioner said soon a high-level team of the state Culture Department would visit the spot to make plan for building the memorial museum.
Volunteers of local NGOs and Gurdwara management committees had retrieved the mortal remains of 282 Indian soldiers who were dumped in the well by British troops about 157 years ago.
The digging which commenced on February 28 at Ajnala town, close to the Indo-Pak border, ended yesterday with the recovery of the mortal remains of all the soldiers.
