Green nod for HLL to double contraceptive pill output in Ktaka

State-owned HLL Lifecare Ltd has got green nod for doubling the production capacity of oral contraceptive pill 'Centchroman' to 2 million tonnes per annum at its Kanagala plant in Belgaum, Karnataka.
The company is enhancing production of 'Centchroman' which is non-steroidal and is being marketed in India since 1991 as 'once a week' pill.
"Based on the recommendations of the Expert Advisory Committee (EAC), the Environment Ministry has given the environment clearance to HLL Lifecare Ltd for capacity expansion of a bulk drug manufacturing unit at Kanagala in Beglaum," a senior government official said.
The clearance to the project would be subject to certain general and specific conditions, the official said.
Within the existing premise of the Kanagala unit, HLL has proposed to raise the production capacity of 'Centchroman' from one million tonnes per annum (MTPA) to 2 MTPA.
The proposed investment for the expansion project will be Rs 30 lakhs towards process, and pollution control equipments. Recurring cost for air and water pollution monitoring is around Rs 2 lakh per annum.
Besides contraceptive pills, HLL Lifecare manufactures condoms and sanitary napkins.
The company has a capacity to manufacture on an annual basis 270 million pieces of condoms, 300 million pieces of sanitary napkins as also 1,750 lakh cycles of oral contraceptive pills (popularly known as Mala D and Saheli).
