Grim flood situation in border villages of Punjab: BSP MP

The grim flood situation in certain border villages of Punjab was highlighted in the Rajya Sabha today by a BSP member who demanded adequate compensation to the affected persons.
Raising the issue during Zero Hour, Narendra Kumar Kashyap (BSP) said as many as 200 villages are affected in the border state which produces the maximum foodgrains in the country.
He said five border districts of Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Ferozepur, Gurdaspur and Bathinda were the worst affected.
"The Centre and state government are not doing enough to save those affected...They have hopes from the Punjab government and Government of India...I demand that on this serious issue the Centre should do an assessment of the floods and grant compensation to those affected," he said.

Kashyap said he personally visited a number of flood affected areas where farmers had lost their produce and there was shortage of fodder.
He pointed out that Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Bengal and Madhya Pradesh too were flood hit.
The BSP leader said one-fourth of the country was badly affected by floods.
