Based on specific information, a police team reached Thersobil Chautara under Gossaigaon police station this evening and the militant started firing after seeing the team.
The policemen returned the fire and the terrorist identified as Sijou, was killed, Bodoland Territorial Area District (BTAD) IGP L R Bishnoi said.
Sijou was the deputy commandant of 14 battalion of the insurgent group Songbijit faction of National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB-S).
"There was reward of Rs five lakh on him. He was involved in killing Additional SP of Sonitpur, Guljar Hussain, in January 2014. He was also accused of a number of killings, including seven Muslims at Balapara, SI Narayan Barman and scores of Adivasis in Kokrajhar district," the IGP said.
Further operation is going on in the area, he added.
