Haryana approves augmenting canal for Rs 489 cr

The Haryana government has approved a project for augmenting a canal passing through Yamunanagar and Karnal districts at a cost of Rs 489 crore.
The standing finance committee, which met under the chairmanship of Haryana Finance Minister Abhimanyu here, approved the project of 'Remodeling of Augmentation Canal from km 0 to 75.250'.
Under the project, the capacity of augmentation canal is proposed to be increased to 6,000 cusecs from existing 3,100 cusecs, an official release said.
The project will now be referred to NABARD for funding under the Rural Infrastructure Development Fund (RIDF), the release quoted Abhimanyu as saying.
Work on the project will commence in 2018-19 and be completed by 2020-21.
On commissioning, it will ensure additional discharge for districts in Western Jamuna Canal (WJC) Command and Lift Canal Command in districts of Karnal, Panipat, Sonepat, Jind, Bhiwani, Rohtak, Charkhi Dadri, Hisar, Mahendargarh, Rewari and Jhajjar.
He said after the construction of dams in upper catchment area of river Yamuna at Renuka, Kashau, Lakhwar and Vyasi, continuous additional discharge would be available throughout the year in non-monsoon period.
The state government is enhancing the capacity of the entire WJC system and augmentation canal is one of the major carrier channels of the system, he added.
