Mufti Abdul Qayum, the cleric who spent eleven years in jail before being acquitted by the Supreme Court last year in the Akshardham temple terror attack case, said he has full faith in the independence and integrity of the highest court in the land.
"We should be proud of our Supreme Court which is an important institution of the country on which the democracy rests," the Mufti said while speaking at a program held by AMU students union yesterday to felicitate him.
He has also authored the book 'Gayara Saal Salakhon Kay Peechay' (Eleven Years Behind Bars) which narrates his tribulations after being charged by the Gujarat police for complicity in the above case.
Qayum had earlier postponed the release of the book after police had refused to permission to hold the book release event in Ahmedabad. The AMU Students Union is helping the Mufti in getting the book released in New Delhi next week.
AMU Students Union President Abdullah Azzam said if the Gujarat government was on the right path "Why are they afraid of facing the truth".
Azzam said it was unfair that those who are "falsely charged with terror charges and are then honourably acquitted are still dubbed as terror suspects by the media".
"If the country is to face the challenge of terrorism then it is equally important that those who are falsely implicated by the police should be honourably rehabilitated by the system," he claimed, adding, any police official who is falsely framing innocent people and allowing "real culprits to escape should be punished.
