The Madras High Court today directed the government to submit a report on the electrocution of two children after they stepped on a live wire submerged in rain waters at Kondungaiyur area in the city yesterday.
Advocate George Williams made a mention of matter before the First Bench, comprising Chief Justice Indira Banerjee and Justice M. Sundar, at the commencement of hearing of the cases this morning.
When the bench asked the government pleader in-charge T N Rajagopalan about the matter, he submitted the government has already suspended eight Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation employees.
The bench, which took suo motu notice of the incident directed Rajagopalan to get instructions and file a report tomorrow with regard steps taken in the matter.
The advocate said just two days of rains have caused inundation in most parts of the city.
"This proves that the government has flouted all directions passed by the court from time to time," he said.
In this regard, he cited several orders passed by the court on a batch of petitions filed after the December 2015 deluge directing the state government to prepare flood management system to tackle such situations.
Recording his submissions, the bench said it would take up for hearing the batch of PILs filed on the December deluge by next week and gave liberty to the advocate to implead himself in the pleas.
The two girls were electrocuted when they stepped on a live wire submerged in water while playing.
With the north east monsoon active, several parts of the state, including the coastal areas, have been receiving rains over the past three days.
